Two nineteenth-century valved trumpets - C. Mahillon & Hawkes & Son
Переглядів 7932 роки тому
While recording music from the lifetime of the French mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot (1821-1910), trumpeters Russell Gilmour and William Russell decided to talk a little bit about two of the nineteenth-century instruments in use in the trumpet section - including a C. Mahillon & Co valved trumpet in F (after 1878), and a fascinatingly-deceptive trumpet made by Hawkes & Son (c.1890). Read more ab...

    It's really exciting to start to see more and more attention being given on recordings to using more of the wide variety of trumpets that the 19th century gave us! @Russell Gilmour if you're willing to take the time, I wonder if you'd be willing to share your opinion on what it might take to see even more opportunity for trumpeters to play our 19th century instruments professionally -- I still see a lot of anachronism in otherwise meticulously historically informed performances; small Besson-style piston trumpets on Gardiner's recent Verdi Requiem for example. Is it a matter of comfort, still? In any case, thanks for working to get the sound of a wider variety of historical trumpets on record!!

    • @trumpetruss
      @trumpetruss 2 роки тому

      Many thanks for leaving a comment: thanks for your kind words. There are many possible answers-mostly depending on the circumstances. For me, it is a question of being asked or consulted about the aims of an orchestral project: I can usually get hold of original 19th-century instruments from somewhere. I think there is a genuine interest in playing on these instruments, but I suppose everyone has to draw their line somewhere on how many trumpets they are willing to buy, own, or use in (i.e. carry to) a performance. We took five instruments each (+ full sets of crooks) to this recording, and concluded that it would have been better to take fewer instruments... to pick one or two based on the dates of the soloist (the CD was a celebration of her programmes) rather than considering the lifespan of each individual composer. I imagine practicality and the portability of instruments was also on the minds of trumpet players in the 19th century. In modern times, collecting 19th-century brass instruments can be an expensive and space-consuming endeavour, especially if you don't have any projects in the diary (thanks, Covid) for inspiration or an immediate requirement(/payment) for using them. Musicians are sometimes priced out of buying 19th C instruments (especially of instruments that are in excellent condition, or that have the original case and crooks etc.) as they often end up going to museums or private collectors with greater buying power. So, those who are really interested will buy instruments speculatively, and they might come in handy... but for some who are more peripherally interested, that's a bit of an investment in something they might not be sure about. It's an interesting question, so thanks for asking.

      @@trumpetruss Thank you for answering in such detail! I am just an amateur trumpet player, but I saved up for a good long time to get myself a replica Courtois F trumpet from Egger, and of course between being an amateur and in the United States, I've never come close to being able to use it for anything other than personal satisfaction. Which is too bad, because it sounds rather lovely. I appreciate that you and your colleagues are taking the time to think about these things! I dream of the day when it is more common to get to experience a greater range of types of trumpets in performance.

      The wobble at 0:19 is relatively normal as the screws were loose. After tightening them back together it works fine. The wobbling during drilling in slow motion is a problem especially when drilling very small holes. Probably because of the cheap chuck they are using.

    What is better about the slide trumpet than the flatt trumpet?

    • @trumpetruss
      @trumpetruss 4 роки тому

      A very good question... slides had obviously been around before the English slide trumpet. In a nutshell, I think flatt trumpets were used chiefly to enable minor notes to be played - to permit a kind of ironic use of what would normally have been a celebratory instrument, normally only playing in major keys. The English slide trumpet seems to have started out as a reaction to Burney's 'displeasure' in every countenance, to correct the naturally 'out of tune' partials of the harmonic series, but as composers began to write more harmonically-clever modulations to more remote keys, the English slide trumpet seemed to have found a niche as it could allow the player to play the pre-existing music (Handel etc.) as well as new music, in more remote keys - both with more adjustable tuning options. www.russellgilmour.co.uk/blog/index.php?id=3330440297840381379
